What 1911 gun to buy?

I am trying to find a GOOD 1911 gun. A lot of people told me Kimber was good.. a lot of people told me Kimber had QC issues.. I want a 4" or 3" barrel and something to carry and to shoot AWESOME. My price range is from 800-1200. I am not sure the difference between aluminum and steel (other than the weight and aluminum scratches really easy). This is going to be a gun for self defense but I will want to carry it every once in a while. I will primarily shoot a lot at the range with it as well. I would like specific makes and models if you can. Tell me the pros and cons of each and help me make the best decision! Thanks in advance!
